Getting started with counselling

Step 1: Get in touch

To discuss the possibility of counselling with me, do make contact by telephone or email.  I offer a 15 minute telephone consultation free of charge, or am happy to answer questions by email, to help you decide whether to make an assessment appointment.

Step 2: Assessment session

An assessment appointment lasts for one hour (60 minutes) and my current fee is £50.  The fee is payable at or before the session by cash, cheque or bank transfer.  Fees are reviewed annually in April.

In the assessment session we will:
  • discuss what has brought you to counselling at this time and what you hope to get from it
  • discuss your understanding of counselling and how it works
  • decide together whether we can work together productively
  • if so, consider how best we can work together and how many sessions we will have
I offer both short-term and long-term counselling.  The number of sessions will be agreed between us at this stage but can be shortened or extended later by mutual agreement.

If counselling does not appear suitable, or I am not the best person to help you, I will signpost you to other sources of help.

Step 3: Counselling sessions

Counselling sessions last for 60 minutes and usually take place weekly at the same time.  Each session is charged at £50, payable at or before each session, by cash, cheque or bank transfer.

Appointments are generally available on Monday daytimes and Wednesday evenings.  For my current availability please see my homepage.  Other names can be found via BACP Find a Therapist and Counselling Directory

Access and mobility

Appointments usually take place at the Quaker Meeting House, Friargate, York, YO1 9RL.  This is in the city centre close to all transport links and city centre car parks.  This venue is fully accessible.   However, at present, due to COVID-19, all my work is being done online or by phone.
